SPF Roof Coatings: Essential Protective Solutions

PROTECTIVE ROOF COATINGS OVER SPF


To safeguard SPF from moisture, foot traffic, and ultraviolet rays, a protective layer is essential. Protective roof coatings effectively seal the foam, preventing damage from these elements.


Once the SPF is applied to the proper thickness and finish specifications, options like gravel or elastomeric roof coatings can be used for added protection. These coatings create a weather-resistant surface that not only offers durability but also ensures ease of maintenance, allowing for normal foot traffic without risk of harm.


Commonly, white or light-colored roof coatings, such as elastomeric roof coatings, are applied over spray foam roof coatings and other deck surfaces. These cool coatings can include polyurea, acrylic, silicone, or urethanes.


Some contractors opt for a thin layer of gravel over the foam, although elastomeric coatings are more widely used. The gravel method has proven to be effective. Coatings—including polyurea, acrylic, urethanes, butyl rubber, and silicone—can be spray-applied as either single or double component systems. It's crucial to consult with an SPF supplier to determine the most suitable coating material, as costs and properties vary.


Typically, a base coat followed by a top coat is how these protective roof coatings are installed. Granules that enhance protection against mechanical and ultraviolet damage are often embedded into the final layer.


To maintain your SPF roof system’s peak performance for many years, regular maintenance or replacement of the coatings is necessary. They can be removed or reapplied similarly to how one would paint the walls of a house.


Throughout varying climate conditions, an SPF roof will experience expansion and contraction, much like other systems. Therefore, it is vital for the protective coatings to match the SPF’s ability to expand and contract. This characteristic, known as elongation, ensures that no cracks or damage occurs.
